They (LGBT youth) face all the stigma, discrimination, violence and bullying. You internalize it. That really contributes to self-stigma: you become part of the violence and the violence becomes part of you and you can’t find any identity other than that.

Niluka Perera is a young gay activist from Sri Lanka currently living and working in Bangkok as the Project Officer of Youth Voices Count, a network of young gay, bisexual men and other MSM and young transgender people in Asia and Pacific. He represents the powerful voice of LGBT youth who works to positively impact the lives of other young people in the community. In our interview, he explains how stigma and low self-esteem might contribute to HIV vulnerabilities.
